What is Gatka?

Gatka is a martial art that was adopted traditionally by the Sikhs as a part of Shastar Vidya (Knowledge of Weaponry). The word Gatka refers to the wooden stick (Sotee) used in practice to teach techniques of attack and defence, which can apply to a wide range of Shastar (weapon/equipment).

Why Learn Gatka?

Self-Defence

Gatka teaches swift reflexes and situational awareness which are crucial for effective self-defence. It helps individuals realise their inner strength and build confidence, which enables individuals to navigate potentially adverse situations with composure and preparedness.

Health & Fitness

The human body is akin to a temple where God resides, hence physical, mental and spiritual health are vital. Gatka training sessions improve strength, flexibility, coordination, and stamina. The rhythmic movements boost cardiovascular health and mental focus. Individuals are thus fitter to serve humanity (Seva) and better focus on meditation of Vaheguru (Simran), keeping their mind, body & soul healthy.

Self-Discipline

Gatka emphasises the importance of  Miri-Piri to become a Sant-Sipahi (Saint-Soldier). Practising it helps integrate physical discipline with a spirit of higher purpose—defending justice, protecting the unfortunate, and serving humanity—promoting a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct. Practising Gatka  encourages individuals to see their martial abilities as tools for protection and service towards others, not for violence or ego.
