Every Saturday 6-8pm
Gatka/Gatkabaazi is a martial art that was practised traditionally by the Sikhs as a part of Shastar Vidya (Knowledge of Weaponry). It originates from the need to defend Dharam (righteousness), and is based on the unification of the soul and body, Miri-Piri. The rhythmic movements of the swords and various traditional weapons, turning swiftly in effortless circles with the beat of drums, striking each other never fail to mesmerise during Gatka performances.
Gatka teaches swift reflexes and situational awareness which are crucial for effective self-defence. It helps individuals realise their inner strength and build confidence, which enables individuals to navigate potentially dangerous situations with composure and preparedness.
Sikhs believe that the human body is akin to a temple where God resides, hence physical, mental and spiritual health are vital. Gatka training sessions improve strength, flexibility, coordination, and stamina. The rhythmic movements boost cardiovascular health and mental focus.
Gatka emphasises the importance of Miri-Piri to become a Sant-Sipahi (Saint-Soldier). Practising Gatka helps integrate physical discipline with a spirit of higher purpose—defending justice, protecting and serving humanity—promoting a sense of responsibility and ethical conduct, while devoting oneself to God.
